Bandha (there are 5 types: 3 main and 2 secondary) is the deliberate engagement of muscles to create a kind of closure/ kind of lock. It is also called an energy valve, as it prevents energy loss (Mula Bandha) and regulates the flow of air and pressure within the torso (Uddiyana Bandha). It also protects the brain from an excessive supply of oxygen (hyperventilation) and excessive pressure in the head (Jalandhara Bandha). Pada Bandha and Hasta Bandha are additional elements of muscle group coordination, so that the synergy of their work creates a range of specific movements, such as pushing off (a trampoline-like element) or the even distribution of body weight. The use of Bandhas, which are inextricably linked to the breath, primarily imparts lightness to movement. It helps maintain the center of gravity and direct movement/energy from the center, building up energy reserves that make movement effortless—and, on the contrary, lead to deep relaxation in both the muscles and the nervous system. Thanks to this work with Bandhas and the Breath, the body more easily regenerates and repairs the structures that need it.
